Listen to today’s P1 Kultur on Swedish Radio to hear a truly beautiful segment about the performance.
“Who gets to be heard in society, and what happens when new voices are given space?
With the performance installation *Study Of Slope*, Lina Lapelytė examines norms within the Western musical tradition — and how do you do that best? With stinging nettles and a tone-deaf choir. The idea behind the work was developed together with the artist duo Petter Petterson and Elin Lundgren at Lilith Performance Studio, and has since been shown in other countries. This winter, a unique version of the installation will be presented in Malmö.”
Swedish Radio P1 Kultur’s Kajsa Sander has spoken with both the artist and the choir.
Marilena Borriello writes in the Italian art magazine
IL GIORNALE DELL’ARTE
“I appreciated that Lilith reached out before the big attention. It felt like genuine interest in my practice. And the idea of a space where you only produce two projects per year gave me the opportunity to let the nettles grow naturally, without time pressure.” — Lina Lapelytė
A space for radical performance
Lilith Performance Studio in Malmö, founded almost twenty years ago by Elin Lundgren and Petter Pettersson, is one of the few dedicated spaces in Europe for contemporary performance. The venue, located in a former industrial area, has become a hub for artistic experiments that transcend the boundaries between theatre, visual art, and spatial exploration. International artists such as Tori Wrånes (*Your Next Vacation is Calling*, 2014) and Molly Lowe (*Game On*, 2018) have created large-scale, site-specific works here in close dialogue with the studio’s production method.
Read the review by Tor Billgren in Sydsvenskan, who writes: “Roy Andersson-like melancholy when the off-key singing is given free rein” ” a gripping and beautiful work.”
Tonight we finally open the doors for the long awaited performance Study of Slope.
WELCOME!
Study of Slope is a site-specific performance installation performed by a choir of tone-deaf / self-proclaimed non-musical singers, set in a vast sea of nettles.
Lina Lapelytė explores imbalance and deviation by highlighting individuals without a “musical ear,” questioning the dominant norms within Western musical traditions that often exclude voices that do not fit.

A striking ritual performance at CHART in Copenhagen, and the much-anticipated mega-performance by
Golden Lion–winning Lithuanian artist Lina Lapelytė, featuring a tone-deaf choir immersed in a vast sea of nettles in Malmö.
LILITH ARTIST DUO – CHART 2025
On August 29 and 31, during Copenhagen’s international art fair CHART 2025, the acclaimed artist duo LILITH will present the premiere of their
evocative new performance I AM EXTREME.
This striking outdoor procession transforms Copenhagen’s city center into a living stage. A group of performers will carry an enormously oversized arm
through the streets around Charlottenborg, past the Opera, into the metro, and around Kongens Nytorv.
Along the route, ritualistic gestures and ceremonies unfold—not as fixed spectacles, but as an exploration of how we relate to the diversity,
fragility, and perceived imperfections of the human body. The performance explores how vulnerability can be transformed into strength,
and how what is considered extreme might instead be understood as profoundly human. At the heart of this lies a newly composed opera piece, performed live.
By venturing beyond the exhibition hall and into public space, I AM EXTREME opens a field of investigation where art,
ritual, and everyday life intersect and redefine one another.
Lina Lapelytė Study of Slope 14.11 – 7.12 2025 Lilith Performance Studio
On November 14, Lilith Performance Studio finally opens the grand performance Study of Slope by Lina Lapelytė.
Study of Slope is a site-specific performance installation featuring a choir of “tone-deaf” or self-proclaimed non-musical singers set in a field of nettles.
Lina Lapelytė explores imbalance and deviation by highlighting individuals lacking ”musical ear,” questioning dominant norms
in Western musical traditions that frequently exclude voices perceived as unfit.
Study of Slope was initially scheduled to premiere at Lilith Performance Studio in 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic.
Since then, various versions of the piece have been presented across Europe. Now, the work will finally be realized in its intended Lilith Performance Studio format,
transforming the entire studio into a nettle field for the audience to enter.
Lina Lapelytė is internationally recognized for her genre-crossing practice, effortlessly moving between performance and experimental music,
popular cultural references, and explorations of gender norms.
