Melati Suryodarmo är känd för sina kraftfulla long duration performances, där kroppen står i centrum som både medium och uttryck. Hennes arbete kretsar kring teman som uthållighet, förflyttning, minne och transformation.
I sitt nya verk på Lilith Performance Studio, Songs for the House of Returning, undersöker Suryodarmo det växande avståndet mellan människokroppen och de naturliga system som en gång strukturerade det kollektiva livet. Med utgångspunkt i forskning om antika tempel runt om i Indonesien närmar hon sig dessa strukturer inte som historiska monument, utan som aktiva rumsliga och sensoriska ramverk som föreslår alternativa sätt att bebo land, minne och gemenskap.
Verket betraktar kroppen som ett ”mänskligt tempel” – en plats där sinnesförnimmelse, minne och uppmärksamhet möts, och där perception blir en form av lyssnande. Genom långvariga handlingar och ett kontinuerligt uppbyggande och nedmonterande av objekt skapar performancen en föränderlig miljö som utvecklas över tid.
Live-ljud och musik, framförda av Yuen Chee Wai, utgör ett centralt arkitektoniskt element i verket och formar performanceupplevelsens rumsliga och emotionella dimensioner.
Songs for the House of Returning visas under totalt 33 timmar, uppdelade i elva cykler om tre timmar vardera, och samlar fem dansare från Indonesien och Sverige. Verket bjuder in publiken att reflektera över hur kroppsligt minne och sinnlig uppmärksamhet kan öppna nya vägar till förbindelse mellan kropp, land och delad tid.
Melati Suryodarmo har visat sina verk bland annat på Kiasma i Helsingfors, MMCA i Seoul, National Art Center i Tokyo, Bonnefanten Museum i Maastricht och QAGOMA i Brisbane. Hon grundade Studio Plesungan i Solo och var konstnärlig ledare för Jakarta Biennale 2017. Sedan 2022 leder hon kulturprogrammet Indonesia Bertutur och medverkar för närvarande i Thailand Biennale i Phuket.
Lilith Performance Studio har tidigare producerat flera nya verk i samarbete med Melati Suryodarmo som senare visats internationellt. Det första samarbetet inleddes 2007 med Perception of Patterns in Timeless Influence, följt av I Love You(2009), EXERGIE – butter dance (2010) och Transaction of Hollows (2016).

The year at Lilith Performance Studio opens with one of Asia’s leading performance artists.
We are proud to present another major collaboration with Melati Suryodarmo.Melati Suryodarmo is renowned for her powerful long-duration performances, in which the body is central as both medium and expression. Her practice revolves around themes of endurance, displacement, memory, and transformation.
In her new work at Lilith Performance Studio, Songs for the House of Returning, Suryodarmo explores the growing distance between the human body and the natural systems that once structured collective life. Drawing on research into ancient temple sites across Indonesia, she approaches these structures not as historical monuments but as active spatial and sensory frameworks that propose alternative ways of inhabiting land, memory, and community.
The work considers the body as a “human temple”—a site where sensation, memory, and attention converge, and where perception becomes a form of listening. Through durational actions and the continuous construction and deconstruction of objects, the performance creates a shifting environment that evolves over time.
Live sound and music, performed by Yuen Chee Wai, form a central architectural element of the work, shaping the spatial and emotional experience of the performance.
Songs for the House of Returning unfolds over a total of 33 hours, presented in eleven cycles of three hours each, and brings together five dancers from Indonesia and Sweden. The work invites audiences to reflect on how embodied memory and sensory attention might reopen pathways of connection between body, land, and shared time.
Melati Suryodarmo has presented her work at institutions including Kiasma in Helsinki, MMCA in Seoul, the National Art Center in Tokyo, Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht, and QAGOMA in Brisbane. She founded Studio Plesungan in Solo and served as Artistic Director of the Jakarta Biennale in 2017. Since 2022, she has led the cultural programme Indonesia Bertutur and is currently participating in the Thailand Biennale in Phuket.
Lilith Performance Studio has previously produced several new works in collaboration with Melati Suryodarmo that have since been presented internationally. The first collaboration began in 2007 with Perception of Patterns in Timeless Influence, followed by I Love You (2009), EXERGIE – butter dance (2010), and Transaction of Hollows (2016).
