6.3–22.3 2026Året på Lilith Performance Studio inleds med en av Asiens främsta performancekonstnärer – Melati Suryodarmo. Det är en mycket efterlängtad återkomst! Redan 2007 arbetade Suryodarmo fram en storskalig performance i samarbete med Lilith Performance Studio, följd av ytterligare ett nytt verk 2016 – båda har därefter visats världen över. Nu har det gått tio år och nu är det dags igen!
Songs for the House of Returning undersöker det växande avståndet mellan människokroppen och de naturliga system som en gång strukturerade det kollektiva livet. Med utgångspunkt i forskning om antika tempel i Indonesien närmar hon sig dessa strukturer inte som historiska monument, utan som aktiva rumsliga och sensoriska ramverk som föreslår alternativa sätt att bebo land, minne och gemenskap.
Verket betraktar kroppen som ett ”mänskligt tempel” – en plats där sinnes- förnimmelse, minne och uppmärksamhet möts, och där perception blir en form av lyssnande. Genom långvariga handlingar och ett kontinuerligt uppbyggande och nedmonterande av objekt skapar performancen en föränderlig miljö som utvecklas över tid.
Live-ljud och musik, framförda av den singapoeranske musikern och konstnären Yuen Chee Wai, utgör ett centralt arkitektoniskt element i verket och formar rumsliga och emotionella dimensioner.
Songs for the House of Returning är producerat i samarbete med Lilith Performance Studio och visas under totalt 33 timmar, uppdelade i elva cykler om tre timmar vardera, och samlar fem dansare från Indonesien och Sverige. Verket bjuder in publiken att reflektera över hur kroppsligt minne och sinnlig uppmärksamhet kan öppna nya vägar till förbindelse mellan kropp, land och delad tid.
Melati Suryodarmo är en centralfigur inom den samtida performancekonsten, med rötter i både butohdans, europeisk performance och javanesisk filosofi. Hon är känd för sina långvariga, ofta krävande verk där kroppen används som ett existentiellt redskap – ett medium för närvaro, sårbarhet och motstånd. Med en bakgrund i dans och studier för Marina Abramović har hon utvecklat en egen konstnärlig röst som präglas av både sträng koncentration och poetisk kraft.
I sitt arbete utmanar Suryodarmo gränserna mellan ritual, konst och vardag, och skapar verk som bjuder in publiken i tillstånd av förhöjd medvetenhet. Hennes konst kretsar kring frågor om identitet, minne, kroppens energi och kulturell tillhörighet – ofta med ett både personligt och universellt anslag.
Melati Suryodarmo (f. 1969 i Surakarta Indonesien, bor och verkar i Surakarta) har visat sina verk bland annat på Kiasma i Helsingfors, MMCA i Seoul, National Art Center i Tokyo, Bonnefanten Museum i Maastricht och QAGOMA i Brisbane. Hon grundade Studio Plesungan i Solo och var konstnärlig ledare för Jakarta Biennale 2017. Sedan 2022 leder hon kulturprogrammet Indonesia Bertutur och medverkar för närvarande i Thailand Biennale i Phuket.
Lilith Performance Studio har tidigare producerat flera nya verk i samarbete med Melati Suryodarmo som senare visats internationellt. Det första samarbetet inleddes 2007 med Perception of Patterns in Timeless Influence, följt av I Love You (2009), EXERGIE – butter dance (2010) och Transaction of Hollows (2016)

6.3 – 22.3 2026The year at Lilith Performance Studio opens with one of Asia’s leading performance artists, Melati Suryodarmo. Her return is long anticipated.
In 2007, Suryodarmo created a large-scale performance in collaboration with Lilith Performance Studio, followed by a new work in 2016
– both of which have since been presented internationally.Now, ten years later, the time has come again.In the new work at Lilith Performance Studio, Songs for the House of Returning, Melati Suryodarmo explores the growing distance between
the human body and the natural systems that once structured collective life. Drawing on research into ancient temple sites across Indonesia,
she approaches these structures not as historical monuments but as active spatial and sensory frameworks that propose alternative ways of inhabiting land,
memory, and community.The work considers the body as a “human temple”—a site where sensation, memory, and attention converge,
and where perception becomes a form of listening. Through durational actions and the continuous construction and deconstruction of objects,
the performance creates a shifting environment that evolves over time.Live sound and music, performed by Singaporean musician and artist Yuen Chee Wai,
constitute a central architectural element of the work, shaping its spatial and emotional dimensions.Songs for the House of Returning unfolds over a total of 33 hours, presented in eleven cycles of three hours each,
and brings together five dancers from Indonesia and Sweden. The work invites audiences to reflect on how embodied memory
and sensory attention might reopen pathways of connection between body, land, and shared time.Melati Suryodarmo is a central figure in contemporary performance art, with roots in butoh dance, conceptual performance,
and Javanese philosophy.She is known for her long-durational, often demanding works in which the body is used as an existential tool—a medium
for presence, vulnerability, and resistance. With a background in dance and studies under Marina Abramović,
she has developed a distinct artistic voice characterized by both rigorous concentration and poetic force.In her work, Suryodarmo challenges the boundaries between ritual, art, and everyday life, creating works that
invite the audience into states of heightened awareness. Her art revolves around questions of identity, memory, bodily energy, and cultural belonging,
— often articulated with both a deeply personal and a universal resonance.
Melati Suryodarmo (b. 1969 Surakarta Indonesia, works and lives in Surakarta) has
