Publiken delas direkt in i två lag. Varje person utrustas med en lagtröja: röd eller blå. Golvet är tydligt uppmålat i gångar – en för varje lag. Genom dem slussas publiken in på arenan, förbi peppade maskotar och välfyllda försäljningsstånd.
Utrustade med stora skumgummihänder och tutor tar publiken plats på två läktare. I centrum: ett jättelikt fotbollsspel där tjugo nakna dockor i mänsklig storlek dinglar från tjocka metallstänger. Två excentriska maskotar, helt klädda i rött respektive blått, presenterar spelarna en och en. Sedan stämmer de upp i varsin pampig operainspirerad hymn.
Det är inledningen till Liliths mest omfattande verk någonsin – den amerikanska konstnären Molly Lowes drygt en och en halv timme långa surrealistiska performance ”Game on”.
Konstverket tar avstamp i hennes egna funderingar kring att vara en del av en kultur som älskar att konsumera konflikter – oavsett om det är i form av sport, dokusåpor eller krigsscener som kablas ut på nyheterna.
– Sedan civilisationens början har sportarenor varit en plats där människor samlas för att konsumera konflikter och konfrontationer – så vi har försökt att göra miljön både antik och futuristisk. Spelet börjar som en normal match med musik, försäljning och en uppumpad känsla. Men i takt med att spelet utvecklas blir det mörkare, säger Molly Lowe.
Med ”Game on” vill hon undersöka människans tävlingsinstinkt och lojalitet till laget samtidigt som gränsen mellan åskådare och deltagare suddas ut.
– Det är viktigt att det är publiken som faktiskt styr dockorna. Det är skrämmande hur lätt det är att styra dem – samtidigt som man känner tyngden av deras kroppar. I samma sekund som du tar kommandot känner du dig ansvarig för dem.
Med hjälp av sex skådespelare och ett omfattande video- och ljudverk blir spelet sakta men säkert allt mer groteskt. De realistiska människodockorna är nämligen skapade av papier maché och spricker om de skadas för hårt. Invändigt är de fyllda av litervis av konstgjort blod och inälvor.
– Det förvandlas till en helt galen scen. I slutet hoppas vi, även om det låter konstigt, att det kommer att vara mycket blod och många kroppsdelar som saknas, säger Molly Lowe.
Samarbetet mellan henne och Malmöbaserade Lilith tog fart delvis av en slump. Den finsk-israeliska konstnären Dafna Maimon, som tidigare samarbetat med Lilith, tipsade studion om några av sina favoritkonstnärer. Ett av namnen på listan var Molly Lowe – och de konstnärliga ledarna Elin Lundgren och Petter Pettersson blev genast intresserade.
– Vi hörde av oss till Molly och frågade om hon hade någon idé om vad hon skulle vilje göra. Hon svarade att hon hade ett projekt som var rätt galet. Sedan berättade hon om det – och vi sade direkt ”vi tar det”, säger Elin Lundgren.
– När de sade ja tänkte jag ”wow, de här svenskarna är galna”, skrattar Molly Lowe.
Hur har det varit att få chansen genomföra ett sådant enormt projekt?
– Jag gillar att få börja i frågan ”är detta ens möjligt?” – och jag tror att Petter och Elin också gör det. De har jobbat stenhårt för att förverkliga den här visionen och det har varit fantastiskt att jobba med dem.
Även om ”Game on” slutar i blod och splatter så betonar Molly Lowe att verket rymmer betydligt mer än så.
– Du kan inte förneka att det finns en del av den mänskliga naturen, jag ska inte kalla den blodtörstig, men en del som vill se drama och konflikter. Jag tror inte att någon är redo att helt ta avsked från det. Så mycket tv och film bygger på det, och det finns en del av det som är kul. Det är därför vi försöker göra det kul också – det måste vara båda delar.
Dessutom drar hon paralleller till det politiska läget i världen just nu, framför allt i sitt eget hemland.
– Allting bygger på en vi och dem-mentalitet. I USA sväljer folk detrakt av, och i Sverige också tror jag. Politiken just nu är nästan som en väldigt tävlingslysten sport.
Under en dryg månads tid har Molly Lowe varit på plats i Malmö för att förbereda inför premiären av ”Game on”. Verket är det mest omfattande som någonsin har ställt ut på Lilith – med tjugo ömtåliga dockor som måste repareras på nytt inför varje framträdande.
– Jag vaknar mitt i natten och frågar mig själv om spelet ens kommer att fungera? Kommer bollen bara att fastna hela tiden? Men jag gillar att omfamna problem och låta dem bli en del av verket. Det här är en blandning mellan politisk satirteckning och ångestfylld mardröm – så det borde naturligtvis beröra hur saker inte alls fungerar ibland. Byråkrati gör att saker tar tid – och hur vet man ens vems boll det är?

Vi söker dig som tycker det är kul att medverka i nya och oprövade sammanhang. Ingen tidigare erfarenhet eller scenvana krävs, men mod att agera framför publik, koncentration och att kunna ta instruktioner. Svenska är inget krav. Vi är alltid intresserade av nya medverkande till framtida performanceproduktioner, men just nu, framför allt 16-35 åringar till höstens megaproduktion GAME ON. (Se datum nedan). Till GAME ON söker vi karaktärer som vågar interagera med publik, dansa loss och kommunicera på ett låtsas språk. Presentationsbrev och video: Skicka några raders beskrivning av dig själv och en video med 1-2 min presentation där du berättar varför du vill vara med i en Lilithproduktion och vem du är. Som bonus får du gärna göra en valfri 1 min improvisation som visar lite på hur du kan agera.

Right NOW Lilith Performance Studio in Malmö is looking for people aged 16-35 who want to act in our upcoming mega performance GAME ON in October! We are looking for YOU who think it’s fun to participate in new and untested contexts. No previous experience or acting skills is required, but courage to act in front of an audience, concentration and being able to take instructions. Swedish is not required. We are always interested in new participants to our future performance productions, but right NOW we are looking for 16-35 year-olds to this falls mega production GAME ON
To GAME ON, we are looking for characters who dare to interact with an audiences, to dance lik hell and to speak in an jibber-jabber language.

Last year was a busy year with 5 large scale visual art performances Commissions, which four of them were a celebration to our studio’s 10th birthday.
Now finally we have edit all the documentations of the performances.
First in the year we presented – Passing through Metal by Oreet Ashery a major collaboration with London-based artist Oreet Ashery.
In Passing through Metal forty local knitters and the Doom / Sludge Metal band Pyramido unite in an apocalyptic performance.
Then in the fall we celebrated our 10th anniversary with a series of unique dinner performances by 5 beloved artists from Lilith’s past.

at Kim? Contemporary Art Centre in Riga with the title “FAMILY BUSINESS: POWER FAILURE”
“FAMILY BUSINESS: POWER FAILURE” is the last part in a series of exhibitions and performances inspired by autobiographical and micro historical research into a family-owned business – Finland’s first kebab and falafel restaurant ”Orient Express”, opened by the artist’s Israeli father in 1985. Located in the ”Forum” shopping mall in Helsinki city centre, the restaurant introduced Finns to the delicacies of the Middle East.
Some years ago, Maimon found a rather strange high-budget video ad from 1986 that her father had produced, which used his own exoticness in a high-paced narrative to market kebabs in Finland.Starting from this video-relic and her childhood memories, the artist has now reworked the commercial and reimagined the restaurant.
Today, Orient Express exists in a world beyond capital. The restaurant was first reconstructed in Lilith Performance Studio as the performance Orient Express Yourself, where it was equipped with a functioning kitchen, complete with trained “restaurant workers” whose task was to sell falafel in exchange for the audience’s own words. The customers paid prices ranging from 15 to 299 words, and answered questions relating to memories of family and gender roles, as well as the effects of destructive patriarchal structures. Their amplified recollections enabled a semi-shared and intimate space between strangers.
A few months later, Orient Express expanded its operations to Galerie Wedding, where the installation functioned as a ghostly memory of the long-gone restaurant. There it sold falafels to the audience only on the opening, where the word-payment was recorded into an old tape recorder. For the finnissage the restaurant catered to people again with the performance After Hours. Maimon scripted an absurd movement score based on restaurant chores a worker performs when closing up for the night. One chore was to count the takings; the words collected at the opening were played back within the performance as further fragmented memories to a new audience.
Its third stop was in Finland at SIC Space, 33 years after its initial opening, as the exhibition Family Business. The mutation of the restaurant served falafel cooked and sold by the artist’s actual family members – her siblings.
Now it has come the the last stop and the restaurant will branch out to Kim? Contemporary Art Center in Riga, where it will open on the 20 April in yet a new mutation as a performative space where collected local memories have been transformed into a script. The idea of a family business could be an overarching way to describe the artist’s work; she creates temporary small-scale communities that challenge stereotypical constructions. Through these communities, Maimon studies the very same elements her work materializes through; affect based constructions and their economies.
