” – I am an 11 year-old boy, and my name is Lo! The artist Laura Lima from Brazil has asked me to run an art museum at Lilith Performance Studio where the staff is children.
We are ten children in middle age, who will run a real art museum with guided tours and a cafe. 🙂
At our museum I have put together an exhibition of abstract art focused on geometry and optical illusions that I find interesting. I have borrowed all paintings and prints from Ystad’s Art Museum and Malmö Art Museum. I have chosen from their collections within certain categories, as they should hang.
The whole thing is called The Abstraction
Director of the art museum”
In the fall 2014 Lilith Performance Studio presented a brand new site-specific performance installation in collaboration with the Brazilian artist Laura Lima. It is the first time that Laura Lima produces and presents an entirely new work in Scandinavia.
During three weekends in August and September Lilith Performance Studio was transformed in to an art museum which were entirely run by children between 7 -12 years.
Laura Lima chose Lo 11 years, to build and operate a fully functioning art museum along with ten other children.
Lo was assigned to recruit staff through audition, curate the exhibition of abstract art borrowed from Ystad and Malmo art museum’s collections, to hang the exhibition and figure out how an art museum works and what The Abstraction art museum would contain.
Lo’s staff were trained during three occasions before the opening and they became responsible for the entrance, guard the exhibition, the guided tours, and to run the café.
In the work, the visitors became an essential part of the mental and geometrical scale displacement.
Laura Limas art is defined by a fascination of the complexity in social relations and in everyday human behavior. Lima creates actions with the human body as working material. She uses the body as part of a larger whole, and connects it to or contrasting it against objects or situations.Tranquil dramatic changes and corrections to what we are used to see pervades her work. Lima herself never acts in her art pieces; instead, she chooses characters to perform her dramaturgical tasks.
Laura Lima is born in 1971 in Governador Valadares, Brazil, and is one of the country’s prominent artists. She lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. This year she received the prestigious art prize the Bonnefanten Award 2014. She is current with two solo exhibitions: shown at the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht and at Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm this fall.

The Director of The Abstraction
Welcome to the exhibition THE ABSTRACTION!
I am doing an exhibition with abstract art because you can be free, free to do what you want, that you can believe, BELIEVE IN ART, and to think whatever you want about the paintings. My thought is; it is not a thing that the artists are painting, not a tree, not a dog, not a house.
He/ she is in a way painting their feelings.
Bright and colorful paintings: happy feelings.
Black and white and dull colors: tired / dead feelings.
Dark colors: angry, sad, and frighten feelings.
THE ABSTRACTION consists of five different walls / categories where we have hung paintings and graphical prints by 29 artists. I have divided the images so that all is not hanging helter-skelter.
The five categories:
The Blue wall: All paintings that are the most blue.
The Red wall: All paintings that are the most red (Just one picture).
The Illusion / Geometry wall: Paintings with illusions or forms.
The Other wall: Other abstract paintings and sculptures.
The Bertil and Birgitta wall: We have taken all the paintings / prints and sculptures from Bertil Herlow Svensson and Birgitta Westberg. You’re probably wondering why I put together Bertil and Birgitta …Well that’s because their works are similar and that the names fit so well together.
Welcome honored guests to Malmö’s new museum!
