ANIMAL – Lilith’s new major performance by Elin Lundgren and Petter Pettersson in collaboration with the musician Cecilia Nordlund.
Imagine that Lego would produce a model called ”rock club”. A small package of everything you need to enter the fiction, rock club; stage, a band, sound, light, bar and audience. Inside Lilith Performance Studio in Malmo, this rock club model is now built up in scale 1.1.
The rock club with its unspoken rules; predetermined dramaturgy, directed spontaneity and, not least, its permissive attitude to dramatic excesses and ecstatic states, has long been a place where Lundgren and Pettersson thrive and can feel passionate fellowship with. With the power fields generated at a rock club, they want to make visible and simultaneously dissolve the boundary between fiction and reality, actor and viewer.
ANIMAL is collaboration with the Malmo based musician Cecilia Nordlund – https://www.cecilianordlund.com. She is maybe best known as the front figure in the alternative rock band Souls in the 90s. Now she is current with the band Fullmånen från Helvetet (Full Moon from Hell) who released their first full-length album ”Åska & Blod” (Thunder & Blood) Nov 2018. ”GAME ON” är som att kliva in i Star Wars-galaxens mest flippade idrottsarena, där fotbollens dramaturgi möter antikens gladiatorspel.”
Höstens stora performancesuccé GAME ON, där publiken gick in i en gravlik idrottsarena och deltog i en surrealistisk fotbollsmatch, fortsätter. Den andra delen är att betrakta som ett fristående performanceverk och kan med fördel ses av en helt oinvigd publik såväl som av de som såg första delen.
Besökarna går in i lämningarna efter en våldsam match, de sargade spelare hänger kvar på sina stänger, de två shaman Maskotarna är fast i sina minnen av matchen, de minns alla höjdpunkter och motgångar, alla hejarop och vinnardanser, de är fast i ett evighetstillstånd, matchen vill aldrig ta slut!

Efter den stora performancesuccé i oktober med GAME ON, där publiken kastades in i en gravlik idrottsarena och deltog i en surrealistisk fotbollsmatch, visas nu den andra delen av verket – GAME ON – Performanceinstallation.
Besökarna går in i lämningarna efter en våldsam match, förbi de tomma försäljningsbåsen och vidare in i arenan, där blodiga, sargade spelare hänger kvar på sina stänger efter sista ronden i spelet. Huvudaktörerna, lagmaskotarna, är kvar på arenan, som i en evighetsloop i sina egna minnen. På bildskärmarna snurrar fortfarande videomaterial från matchen med jinglar och spelarpresentationer. Ur högtalarna dunkar pepmusiken och hejarropen.

Det har vi ju inte. Vad vi gjort är att vi duktigt spelat våra roller i en ritual som ställt oss mitt på gränsen mellan de främsta arterna av mänsklig hysteri: politiken, religionen, idrotten. After the major performance success GAME ON, where the audience was thrown into a tomblike sports arena and participated in a surreal foosball game, the second part of – GAME ON – the Performance Installation / Live Exhibition is now showing. The visitors enter the remains of a violent game, passing the empty sales booths and further into the arena, where bloody, lacerated players is still hanging on their bars after the game’s last round. The main characthers – the team mascots, are left inside the arena, stuck in a perpetual loop. On the video screens, footage from the game is still twirling with jingles and presentations of the players. From the speakers the pep music and the cheering are pumping load.
The performance installation is open on Saturdays and Sundays from Oct 27th –Nov 18th, 2018 Time: 1 pm -4 pm Place: Lilith Performance Studio, Bragegatan 15 i Malmö You can come and go as you please. No booking is required. Free entry.

Konstnären menar att vi i lever i en tid när vi slåss för olika saker, vänder oss mot varandra, slår fast att vissa är bättre än andra. Och inte bara i idrottssammanhang, utan i samhället i stort. Att hon valde en sportarena som metafor är egentligen bara för att det redan från början är en laddad plats, säger hon. Behovet att se någon vinna och någon annan förlora har nog funnits länge. Det känns bara som att vi har fler plattformar där vi kan leva ut det, menar hon. ”

What team do you belong to? It’s red or blue, we or them. Already when you get the team shirt over your head, you lose a little of your identity and free will. The music pumps and vendors haunt, castanet or vuvuzela? Soon the stands are filled to the last place, and the temperature rises. The bright blue cheerleader grins triumphantly and shamelessly gesticulating with four arms. Meanwhile, the red fires up our team, like a shaman and effective animal trainer.
The Game can start!
American Molly Lowe’s performance plunges the crowd into the game.
Soon blood will flow and cheer will rise.
”Game on” is Lilith Performance Studios’ fiftieth project, and probably the largest and most complex. Imagine a table football game of the kind where the team is spinning around on bars. But here the players are naked men, women and children sculpted in natural scale. Mute, waiting to be put in motion. And it’s the audience that will steer. The tougher match, the greater the risk of the players being injured.
The first round starts and I nervously stuff myself with my popcorn.
Splash! The ball is stained red. For a moment, everything stops, the disaster is a fact.
The next time that happens, the opposite team’s cheerleader will triumph. On the big screen, slow motion clips are mixed with psychedelic victory dances.
”Game on” is like stepping into the Star Wars galaxy’s most flipped sports arena, where the football dramaturgy meets antique gladiator games. Everyone who bawls on the sidelines knows that even the most innocent game can awaken the most primitive feelings.
Although Molly Lowe revels in spectacular grip, it does not stop at the surface of the illusion.
In a second she penetrates the thin pellicle of civilization. What is revealed is the group’s togetherness and pressure, rivalry and bloodthirsty. In between, I found myself impatiently waiting for more action.
But are there options? Nobody wants to sabotage by refusing to play her/his role.
In a way, the layout is simple. Those who have entered the game, the game they take.
Nevertheless, an element of uncertainty goes through the space. Who has really the responsibility: the one who set up the game, the cheerleaders, the chosen ones who steer the players or all of us who sit and watch and listen? Of course, the symbolism is there, both existential and political. Power stands against impotence, growing opposites against locked positions. And every battle requires their victims?
Active in New York, with a background in painting and sculpture, Lowe unites the raw, fragile and brutal. During the weekend’s artist talks at the Malmö Konsthall, it became clear how she continually creates situations where the illusion of control fails. In her video work and installations there exist a sliding, entrapping physicality that desires, entangles and struggling in a claustrophobic intimacy.
It is no coincidence that Louise Bourgeois was mentioned in the context. Like the grotesque actor games highest priest, Paul McCarthy, Lowe moves in the slip between form and formlessness, the enticing and repulsive. Freud’s unheimliche concept is just the first name when she makes the familiar creepy unknown.
