Audience reactions to Melati Suryodarmo – second weekend at Lilith

Silence, shifting light, slow movement. During the second weekend of Melati Suryodarmo’s new performance work Songs for the House of Returning, the atmosphere at
Lilith Performance Studio has been described by visitors as magical, meditative, and deeply suggestive. One audience member summed it up simply:

“David Lynch from Surakarta.”

Other voices from the audience:

“Completely magical.”
“Meditative and deeply suggestive.”
“The music is incredible.”

In Songs for the House of Returning, Suryodarmo explores the relationship between the body and the natural systems that once structured collective life. Through durational actions and the continuous building and dismantling of objects, the performance creates a shifting environment that unfolds over time.

Sound and music by Yuen Chee Wai form a central architectural element of the work, while Melati’s vibrating, improvised singing and sounds are performed live in dialogue with the soundtrack.
The work has also received attention in the press:

“Escalating situations become a powerful experience at Lilith Performance Studio.”

“Suryodarmo creates a temple for a present and a world that is falling apart.”
Carolina Söderholm, Sydsvenskan
